Involvement in the Starkville Area Arts Council is an exciting way to put the focus on the beauty in the lives we lead, the families we raise and the community that nurtures us.
THE ARTS… BECOME YOU.
A Newcomer's Personal Experience with the SAAC:
My life over the past twenty-two years has been immersed in the arts. Encouraging me to explore different avenues, my parents allowed me to take drawing and piano lessons from an early age. Knowing I would regret it if I did not pursue art, I decided to attend Mississippi State to obtain a degree in Fine Arts with a painting emphasis. Upon graduation I knew I would always want to paint, but part of me yearned to become more involved in the support and promotion of the arts community.
At the beginning of the summer, I approached the Starkville Area Arts Council Executive Assistant, Candy Crecink, with the intentions of learning about event planning involving the arts and volunteering with the Arts Council. Little did I know what I was in for! Crecink quickly put me to work interviewing some of the SAAC board members to learn why the Arts Council was so important to our Starkville community. Board member Paige Lawes gave me her insight on the subject: “Art sculpts and composes our culture. Through the arts we are able to live life in color instead of black and white.” By joining as a team to support the arts, the Starkville Area Arts Council channels creative energy to stimulate local activity and enjoyment within the community.
The primary summer event was the culinary celebration planned for August in Starkville. StarShine featured celebrity chefs from around the Starkville area for a cook-off, a cooking demonstration by one of Mississippi’s top chefs, Robert St. John, and a four - course dinner with wine pairings. I was completely in awe of the delicious food, the energetic decorations, and the celebrity chefs, but what took me by total surprise was the tireless teamwork within the Arts Council. Michelle Amos, chair of StarShine, coordinated committee meetings, and everyone rallied around her to support the event in every way possible. Each individual on the board uses their talents and abilities to form a chain of strengths that allows the council to reach as many people as possible.
The opportunity to become a member of the Starkville Area Arts Council is available to the entire community. I would encourage everyone to take part in this outstanding organization and participate in the celebration of the arts in Starkville.
