The 8th annual Starkville Area Arts Council's Gala "A Golden Harvest for the Arts" opened its doors at the Hunter Henry Center on the MSU campus November 7, 2009, at 6:00 pm to a flurry of well-wishers decked out in their holiday finery. People streamed into the lobby to gaze upon the silent auction offerings gathered by Glenda "the divine" Clark and "Dudley Do Right" Dylan Karges. Squeals of delight and cries of "I want that" were heard above the soft clink of wine glasses, the evening had begun.

Dinner was announced and ahh's were heard repeatedly as guests entered the ballroom and beheld the wondrous table decorations, glossy golden pumpkin creations by Moria Prather and Elisa Pittman. The university chef, Bob Abare, had prepared a memorable repast. Dinner conversation punctuated with laughter reigned supreme.

A little later SAAC President Chip Templeton opened the program with a welcome. Daniel Jones, age 11, a talented violinist, played a selection of brilliant Baroque pieces. Then bright sparkly Maureen Hughes won appreciative laughter by singing elegant show tunes. Jing Xu, local artist and dancer par excellence, next brought to life the tragic story of Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

Then came the award everyone was waiting for, The Medal of Excellence in the Arts: everyone was wondering WHO? When Briar Jones announced Andy Gaston, a thunderous applause rose and ?? believe it or not ?? Andy was at a loss for words ?? but only for a moment. Hurrah Andy! The evening continued with Clyde and Marsha Williams winning the raffle, while many of the other guests slipped away to the lobby to check on their bids, and often to raise them. The tempo picked up with the dynamic band Coop de Belle filling the dance floor to a tight fit. "Boogie Down" it was.

We would like to thank all those who served on the Gala Committee, donated items to the auction, helped with the decorations, the Hunter Henry Center staff, especially Ms. Gina Shook. Stand up and take a bow, all of you: we thank you for being there and we thank you, Starkville, for your Love of the Arts!!!
