DYLAN KARGES

Artist Statement: "I am the staff artist for the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi
State University. I work as an illustrator drawing pottery and other artifacts, architecture and archaeological site plans and sections. This work has strongly influenced my work in ceramics providing the inspiration for “Clay Bodies” an installation of figurines loosely based on the cultic, votive figurines of the Ancient Near East. I have been creating these ceramic “little men” for over ten years since I first began working with the Cobb Institute and traveling overseas to work on projects in Israel.

I continue to work in different materials and genres, creating sculpture and drawings that are representational and purely non-objective. All of my work is a bit if not completely improvisational. I love to work with my hands and to learn by doing, so improvisation allows me to respond and to edit adding and subtracting to bring my work to completion. I aim for my work to be compelling from across the room and invite investigation into the smallest of details, where I hope not to leave one wanting."
