Official Poster Unveiling Marks the Beginning of the 2010 Cotton District Arts Festival
The 2010 Cotton District Arts Festival was successfully kicked off at the unveiling of the official festival poster. The event was hosted by the Starkville Area Arts Council (SAAC) and, despite the rain, a large crowd gathered on Tuesday, October 27 to catch the first look at the poster and pay tribute to the poster’s artist, Jude Landry.
Jude Landry, a Louisiana native, recently accepted a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Art at Mississippi State University. Before moving to Starkville with his wife, Alisha, and daughter, Joan, he served as an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Illinois State University. Landry’s work has been published in CMYK, an art design magazine, and in both 2008 and 2009, his posters were recognized by the “Good 50x70” poster competition, an internationally juried exhibition in Milan, Italy. In addition to regular freelance work, his research interests include poster design, screen-printing, illustration, information design, and typography.
Professor Landry’s poster was unveiled to loud applause and gasps of excitement. The personality of the festival starts with the official poster and the 15th annual Cotton District Arts Festival looks to be off to one of its best years yet. When introducing the poster, Maggie Bjorgum, a 2010 festival co-chair, stated “it was our vision to continue this wonderful tradition of a commemorative festival poster, to create an identity with each year’s event, and most importantly to celebrate local artists. We really wanted to bring awareness to the amazing artists we have right here in Starkville, and this is a great way to give them the spotlight.”
Landry’s poster is a new style of illustration for the festival and has been very well received. Dan Camp, an arts visionary and long time sponsor of the festival, stated the poster was “very nice, it’s a little different and refreshing.” Chip Templeton Jr., President of the Starkville Area Arts Council, stated that the new poster “captures the details that Starkville and the Cotton District Arts Festival should reflect.” Mayor Parker Wiseman summed up the event stating that “the unveiling starts building excitement for what has become an event we anticipate all year long” and that Landry’s poster “is a wonderful encapsulation of all that is the Starkville Cotton District Arts Festival”
Scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2010, the upcoming festival will once again host a broad variety of art villages featuring over 100 artisan vendors, international culture, a sanctioned 5K run, choral and theatrical performances as well as art and food competitions. The entire family can join the celebration with special children’s activities and a pet parade for your furry friends. To top it off, festival goers will enjoy delectable cuisine from local chefs and live music stages set up throughout Starkville's Historic Cotton District.
The Starkville Area Arts Council is proud to be gearing up for the 15th year of the annual festival, which won two prestigious awards in 2009, the American Bus Association’s “Top 100 Events in North
America” and the Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20 Events for April”. The 2010 festival is made possible by the continuous support and generous grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Greater Starkville Development Partnership, and the Starkville community. |
